Last fall, we partnered with Save The Waves Coalition to host a giveaway aimed at rewarding the vigilant users of the Save The Waves App. Little did they know that this giveaway would not only bring joy to one lucky winner but also spark a series of events that would lead to tangible improvements in environmental conservation efforts.
The fortunate winner of the giveaway happened to be more than just a casual user of the Save The Waves App. They were a passionate advocate for environmental protection, based in the region of the Gold Coast World Surfing Reserve (GCWSR). Through their diligent use of the App, they reported several water quality issues plaguing the reserve, effectively identifying potential sources of pollution.
Thanks to the reports submitted by the winner, Save The Waves was able to share crucial data with the Gold Coast City Council, specifically through the GCWSR initiative. As a direct result, the council took action by displaying new health signs and committing to a meeting in May with GCWSR and other stakeholders. This meeting aims to delve deeper into the identified outfall problem and collaborate on finding effective solutions.
In a significant validation of the Save The Waves App's efficacy, the Gold Coast City Council confirmed poor water quality events through their own testing, aligning with the reports submitted via the App. These events were particularly prevalent during periods of heavy rainfall, attributed to sewage outflows, septic system failures, and unavoidable sewage network overflows infiltrating waterways.
Acknowledging the urgency of the situation, the Gold Coast City Council is actively exploring various options to address the concerns raised. This proactive approach signifies a crucial step towards safeguarding the environmental integrity of the Gold Coast and its cherished surfing reserves.
